Thema: Queer Theory / Gender Theory

This monography highlights queer-feminist punk productions, protagonists and scenes within punk rock and provides a historic overview from the 1980s until today. The book shows how queer-feminist punk is capable of negotiating and communicating queer-feminist theoretical positions in a non-academic setting, thereby producing alternative forms of political movement and of queer theory. Gender has now become a pervasive topic in the humanities and social sciences. Yet despite the popularity of gender studies both inside and outside the academy, some have argued that the radical debates which first characterised gender studies have lost their critical edge. The author rescues ancient ideas about sex and gender with an eye towards reinvigorating contemporary debate. She ... Weiterlesen

This is a queer theory of visual art - based on extensive readings of art works. »Queer Art« traces the question of how strategies of denormalization initiated by visual arts can be continued through writing. Art theoretical debates are combined with queer theory, postcolonial theory, and (dis)ability studies, proposing the three terms »radical drag«, »transtemporal drag«, and »abstract drag«. The ... It's about finding alternatives - to conventional understandings of success in a heteronormative, capitalist society, to academic disciplines that confirm what is already known according to approved methods of knowing, and to cultural criticism that claims to break new ground but cleaves to conventional archives. The author proposes »low theory« as a mode of thinking and writing that operates at ... Weiterlesen

Michel Foucault was the first to embed the roots of human sexuality in discipline and biopolitics, therefore revolutionizing our conception of sex and its relationship to society, economics, and culture. Foucault recasts Western rationalism as a project that both produces and represses sexual deviants, calling out the complicity of modern science and the exclusionary nature of family morality. By reclaiming ... Weiterlesen

»Queering Gay and Lesbian Studies« is a broadly interdisciplinary study that considers a key dilemma in gay and lesbian studies through the prism of identity and its discontents: the field studies has modeled itself on ethnic studies programs, perhaps to be intelligible to the university community, but certainly because the ethnic studies route to programs is well established.
