Inhalt
A paradox at every turn, he was a son of American expatriates at Eton, where he produced »The Eton Candle« and met Edith Sitwell, who encouraged him as a poet. At Oxford he was the leading light of the most extravagant social set and an aesthete who hunted. In the 20s he was the impresario of the wildest parties and pulled off the craziest hoaxes and practical jokes. After being sent to Germany to be analyzed in the 30s, Howard became a passionate anti-Nazi. After time in the Royal Air Force during WWII, he became an inspired literary critic. And all along he was flamboyantly homosexual, 50 years before Stonewall. Throughout his life he was surrounded by the most brilliant men and women of the age, who envied his talents, adored him, were exasperated by him and portrayed him in their novels, most notably as Anthony Blanche in Waugh's »Brideshead Revisited«.
