Actor John Carlyle got his big break in 1954 when, at age 23, he was cast for George Cukor's »A Star is Born«. Although Carlyle's scene was later cut from the film, the job brought him in touch with Judy Garland who, up until her death, was Carlyle's friend and sometimes lover. This book tells the story of their rocky but close friendship. No longer the great star who first enthralled Carlyle as an adolescent, Garland lived an often desperate, hand-to-mouth existence that was eased only by pills and liquor. She turned to Carlyle for support, even with the hope of marrying the openly gay actor. Carlyle takes us also on a behind-the-scenes tour of gay Hollywood. He slept with Marlon Brando and James Dean, rubbed shoulders with Raymond Burr, double-dated with Rock Hudson, and watched Montgomery Clift spiral out of control from drink. He befriended Lana Turner, and Hedy Lamarr.
