Beginning with his real-life Billy Elliott childhood - an all-American story marred by intense bullying - and culminating in his hard-won come-back after a devastating injury, Hallberg's memoir dives into life as an artist as he wrestles with ego, pushes the limits of his body, and searches for ecstatic perfection. Hallberg said that when he was young, dance was his »respite, it was a sort of escape for me«. Within the walls of the dance studio he was possibly safe and happy. He seems to give evidence to the stereotype of the slightly effeminate boy who finds himself at home in a ballet school with his coterie of female friends, yet still has the physical stimulus of ballet's athleticism.
