Deutschland ist einerseits eines der Länder, die Homosexualität über Jahrhunderte bis in die jüngere Vergangenheit brutal verfolgte ? noch in den 80er Jahren konnte die so genannte Kießling-Affäre nur durch eine gesamtgesellschaftlich anzunehmende Ächtung von Schwulen so funktionieren, wie sie ihren Lauf nahm. Andererseits hat sich in Deutschland nicht nur eine besonders breit gefächerte lesbische und schwule Szene entwickelt, es gibt sogar die These des Historikers Robert Beachy, dass das spezifische Bewusstsein einer homosexuellen Identität in Berlin und damit in Deutschland seine gesellschaftsprägende Kraft entfaltete.
