Inhalt
Set in the late 60s/ early 70s, »Bellringer« follows the trials and tribulations of Tony, a likeable college student who discovers his homosexuality and gay militancy during his freshman year. He is inspired to come out by his linguistics professor, Robert Miller, an openly gay man who, despite being at the top of his field, has yet to be granted tenure. Tony becomes friends with Miller and his lover, Jonathan (a former student), while beginning an on again/off again romance with Herk, a closeted dorm mate. Tony spends his summer break in N.Y.C., doing odd jobs and living in a seedy hotel until he takes up with Bob who turns out to be as closeted as Herk. Tony moves into a gay commune with a trio of men he meets during the city's first gay pride march. Tony falls in love with one of the commune members, and they begin an affair, which ends when the lover is arrested for having sex with another man in the park. Although Tony is disillusioned by his lover's infidelity, he returns to school politicized. Taking what he learned from his participation in the Gay Liberation Front, Tony organizes a demonstration to protest what he perceives as the unfair treatment of Prof Miller. Miller is suspended, but reinstated when Tony and a small group of students storm the office of the college president and demand justice. In the midst of it all, Tony finds true love with Bill, a new recruit who is as out as Tony himself.
