Der Staat Finnland wird bezüglich seiner Auffassung zum Thema Homosexualität als liberaler Staat Europas bewertet, Homosexualität wurde 1971 legalisiert. Die Ehe ist seit März 2017 auch für homosexuelle Partner zugänglich. Die eingetragene Partnerschaft in Finnland, gab es für gleichgeschlechtliche Paare bereits seit 2002. Dass dies jedoch keine Selbstverständlichkeit seit je ist, zeigt unter anderem die eindrückliche Verfilmung des Lebens des schwulen Künstlers Tom of Finland. Weitgehend unbekannt ist bei uns die finno-schwedische Avantgarde, vorangetrieben durch die lesbische Autorin Hagar Olsson und ihre früh verstorbene Freundin Edith Södergran, durch die die Aufbruchstimmung der 20er Jahre in ganz Europa und vor allem in Frankreich maßgeblich beeinflusst wurde.
