Roman-fleuve
Beim Roman-fleuve (einer Unterform der Gattung Roman, die manchmal noch von der Vorläuferform des Roman-Zyklus abgegrenzt wird) handelt es sich um ein sehr groß angelegtes Romanwerk, das oft auf mehrere Bände konzipiert ist. Diese bilden eine Gesamtheit; es treten wiederholt die gleichen Charaktere auf, die Bände lassen sich jedoch auch einzeln lesen. Das Gesamtwerk porträtiert in opulenter Form eine Gesellschaft oder eine Epoche, die auch fiktiv sein können, wobei eine zentrale Figur, eine Gemeinschaft oder eine Familie im Mittelpunkt steht. Für die schwule Literatur sind Prousts »Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit« und Hans Henny Jahnns »Fluss ohne Ufer« von herausragender Bedeutung.
