In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for all Americans. In 2004, screenwriter Dustin Lance Black began his journey to retell Harvey's story. He researched photo archives, combed news stories, and interviewed a number of Milk's surviving friends and foes. Extracts from these interviews, along with new stories and nearly 100 historical photos, can be found in the first part of the book. The second part contains »The Making of the Movie« with details from the story how Black's original screenplay was made into the movie.
