David Bowie spent three of his most creative years in the Seventies in Berlin. They were influential for his whole career. When he came close to a nervous breakdown in 1975 he fled Los Angeles to escape all the drugs, exhaustion due to working too much, a crisis in his relationship, and a paranoid preoccupation with occultism. First, he moved in with Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream when he came to Berlin. This is when Bowie started to influence experimental electronic bands like Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream. Later, Bowie moved in with his friend Iggy Pop. They had a gay affair for a while, at the same time, strolling through the anonymous fibrant nightlife of West-Berlin. In this period, Bowie created three of his most revered works (among them, »Heroes«). He was fascinated and inspired by the flair of Berlin.
