This is a meditation on adultery, or rather, on what it means to be in love with a married woman. The author is famously a champion of relativity, of the existence of many possible paths and disguises: »The.PowerBook« uses the language of computers, but thankfully this is all rather lightly done. Some of the images are obvious - it's no news that the virtual reality of e-mail allows everyone to be somebody else, and that, in allowing storytelling to become interactive, the computer (the power book) has displaced the linear written book. But other formulations are less predictable: for instance, the computer screen is likened to the screen of a confessional and we are not sure if anyone is listening. An e-writer called Ali or Alix will write to order anything you like, provided that you are prepared to enter the story as yourself and take the risk of leaving it as someone else. Set in London, Paris, Capri and Cyberspace, this is a book that reinvents itself as it travels.
