The hefty final volume of Schrag's high-school chronicles has been a decade in the making and shows her development as an artist and storyteller. Employing a stream-of-consciousness style, she examines her relationship with an unenthusiastic lover and her sexuality and anatomy. She argues with her parents over wanting to attend Barnard rather than a public university in California, and she turns to her high-school art teacher for personal as well as technical advice. The best audience for seeing Ariel through her senior year probably consists of those who, like her, have negotiated adolescence and are strong enough to look back at it as a time of indulgence (including many scenes of masturbation), experimentation (a trip to buy a dildo as an 18th-birthday present to herself), and emotional breakdown.
