Inhalt
The hero of this black farce is Gerald Samper, a Tuscan expat with his mind on higher things than he has yet managed to reach. A ghostwriter to celebrities he despises, his dream is to compose a libretto to a grand opera. A stay in Suffolk ends in disaster, thanks to a little mistake in the concoction of Gerry's field-mouse vol-au-vents. Returning to Tuscany, he finds that the site of his collapsed house is now a place of religious pilgrimage, after the rumoured apparition of a certain deceased English princess. A sinister estate agent smells a chance to make big money, and Gerry is persuaded to go along with the scam in return for certain favours. As a result, Gerry finds himself collaborating with his strange Voynovian neighbour, Marta, on an opera about the life of Princess Diana, the not-quite-saint who inspires a cult following. The premiere will be the high point of his life, though not in the way he imagined.
