Was Lincoln gay? The sex researcher and chronicler of the gay rights movement Tripp, who died in 2003, makes the case. So his book is already getting noticed. The author (who worked with Alfred Kinsey) contends that Lincoln had erotic attractions and attachments to men throughout his life, from his youth to his presidency. His relationships with women were either invented by biographers or desolate botches (his marriage to Mary Todd, for instance). The author is not the first to argue that Lincoln was homosexual - earlier writers have parsed his friendship with Joshua Speed, the young store owner he lived with after moving to Illinois - but he assembles a mass of evidence and tries to make sense of it. Even in his White House years he shared a bed with an army captain.
