Inhalt
In June 2025, the gay American author Edmund White died in New York at the age of 85. Like many of White's books, »The Loves of My Life« contains autobiographical elements. In that, as an author in his eighties, he looks back on a very eventful sex life, which masterfully reflects the changes of the times. Growing up in the oppressive post-war era with its total prohibition of homosexuality, he collects first sexual experiences as a teenager with other boys. The sexual liberation brought about by the Stonewall Riots coincides for him with a period of uninhibited expression of his homosexuality with countless sexual partners. Because he keeps a diary he’s always able to highlight the individuality of his partners &mbash; they weren't merely functional sexual encounters but individuals with idiosyncrasies &mbash; sometimes quirks &mbash; their own stories that were sometimes tragic, sometimes dramatic, sometimes funny. The biggest turning point in White's sex life is the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, which transforms previously free gay sexuality into a dangerous tightrope walk. The deaths of friends and acquaintances leads to changes &mbash; massively shaking the communities and the sexuality practiced within them. White leaves the USA and lives in France for a while. There, he encounters a completely different sexual culture. Although White always clearly states what happens with other men (who don't always have to be gay) these sex memoirs are never pornographic &mbash; they are rather insightful and very reflective. They are an autobiographical look back at seven decades of an active gay sex life, subject to constant change and representing a continuous, almost magnetic fascination.
