Since 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has been far more than just a music competition. As a transnational media event, it reflects European moods, political rifts, and pop-cultural developments, as well as national self-presentation. For many in the lesbian, gay, and queer community, the ESC is also a central site of queer visibility - and thus a space for belonging, representation, and negotiation. The Viennese queer cultural center Qwien dedicates its exhibition »United by Queerness« to these areas of tension between diversity and nationalism, inclusion and exclusion, and has published this accompanying volume to the ESC 2026 in Vienna. The exhibition follows a Concept - from the living room to the arena to the stage - and shows how the ESC is experienced, celebrated, and politically interpreted. Qwien thus makes the queer dimensions of the ESC visible and presents it as a pop-cultural phenomenon that continues until today.
