The Chelsea Hotel in New York has been an iconic location in the art and music scene since the 1960s. From 1969 to 1971, the artist Albert Scopin also lived there, then as an assistant to photographers Mikel Avedon and Bill King. The hotel was never quiet, and everyone, it seemed, was searching for something. The young Scopin sought an unobstructed view of the people who were coming and going. To capture the vibrant events as discreetly as possible, he often didn't even look through the viewfinder of his simple Kodak Instamatic. The resulting photographs show the then-unknown Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe as a young couple and as individuals on their path to fame, as well as film directors like Wim Wenders, Rosa von Praunheim, Milos Forman, and Jonas Mekas - the Warhol crowd performing a Play - and in the basement, the hotel staff throwing a wild party. On the roof, he wonders what the future may hold and looks down on a city waiting to be conquered. Short accompanying texts by the artist and an interview conclude the book and offer exceptionally intimate insights into the world behind the facade of perhaps the most famous hotel in the world.
