Matthew Wayne Shepard
(* 1. Dezember 1976; ? 12. Oktober 1998) war ein US-amerikanischer Student, der im Oktober 1998 in Laramie wegen seiner Homosexualität brutal misshandelt wurde. 6 Tage nach der Tat starb er an den ihm zugefügten Verletzungen. Das Verbrechen an Matthew Shepard führte wesentlich zu dem nach ihm mitbenannten Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, aufgrund dessen seit Ende 2009 in den USA ein sogenanntes »hate crime« gegen Schwule und Lesben mit höheren Strafen belegt wird.
