Judith Butler
(* 24. Februar 1956) ist eine US-amerikanische Philosophin und Philologin.
Seit Ende der 1980er Jahre finden Butlers Arbeiten zur feministischen Theorie internationale Aufmerksamkeit. Mit ihrer Schrift »Das Unbehagen der Geschlechter« stieß sie 1990 die Diskussionen um die Queer-Theorie an. Einer von Butlers bedeutenden Ansätzen ist das von ihr entwickelte performative Modell von Geschlecht. Damit soll ausgedrückt werden, dass die Kategorien männlich und weiblich als durch Einübung und Wiederholung rein sprachlich immer wieder gebildet zu verstehen sind, und nicht als natürliche oder unausweichliche Absolutheiten vorgegeben sind.
