Irland
Irland ist ein besonderes Beispiel dafür, wie wenig geradlinig die lesbisch-schwule Emanzipation verläuft, wie wichtig dabei aber dabei die Rolle der europäischen Idee und der europäischen Institutionen sind. Erst 1993 wurde Homosexualität entkriminalisiert ? und dies nur nach einem Urteil des Europäischen Gerichtshofs für Menschenrechte. Sowohl die katholisch geprägte irische Gesellschaft als auch der noch lange unter massivem Einfluss der Kirche stehende Staat sträubten sich lange gegen die Gleichberechtigung von Schwulen und Lesben; wie sehr sich dies geändert, ja umgekehrt hat, zeigt nicht zuletzt die überwältigende Mehrheit, die 2015 in einem Volksentscheid für die Öffnung der Ehe für lesbische und schwule Paare. Diese wechselvollen Geschichte spiegelt die irische Literatur, von der es gerade im lesbisch-schwulen Bereich auch bei uns eine breite Wahrnehmung gibt.
