Die einvernehmlich unter erwachsenen Männern gelebte Homosexualität wurde in Griechenland 1951 legalisiert; gleichwohl gilt Griechenland als gesellschaftlich sich nur langsam liberalisierendes südosteuropäisches Land, was lesbisch-schwules Leben betrifft. Demgegenüber steht das Bild des antiken Griechenlands, wo es ? zumindest in einigen Zusammenhängen ? sogar eine gesellschaftlich etablierte Homosexualität gab. Darum konnte mit dem metaphorischen Ausdruck »griechische Liebe« in der Moderne sowohl schmähend als auch anerkennend, jedenfalls allgemein verstanden, Homosexualität bezeichnet werden.
