Frankreich gilt als liberaler Staat, wenn es um das Thema Homosexualität geht. Homosexualität wurde 1791 legalisiert und 1810 im Code pénal impérial beibehalten. Gleichwohl gibt es in Frankreich eine aggressive Gegenöffentlichkeit zur lesbisch-schwulen Emanzipation, die in den 2010er Jahren Großdemonstrationen organisieren konnte. Nicht nur in seiner Funktion als Zuflucht vor Verfolgung, sondern auch als Sehnsuchtsort von Liebe und Leidenschaft spielt Frankreich und insbesondere Paris eine herausgehobene Rolle in lesbischer und schwuler Literatur und natürlich auch im Film.
