Ungarn gilt beim Thema Homosexualität einerseits als ein eher liberales mitteleuropäisches Land. Homosexualität wurde 1961 für Männer über 20 Jahre dekriminalisiert, 2002 wurde Homosexualität der Heterosexualität gleichgestellt. Den emanzipatorischen Vorgaben der EU stehen freilich massive Gegenbestrebungen der Rechtspopulisten und Faschisten entgegen, lesbisches und schwules Leben wird insbesondere in der Öffentlichkeit behindert. Unsere literarischen und filmischen Beispiele zeigen aber auch ein intensives kulturelles lesbisch-schwules Leben jenseits der gesellschaftlich-rechtlichen Debatte, mit Sándor Márais »Die jungen Rebellen« steuert die ungarischsprachige Romantraditionn einen der schönsten schwulen Coming-of-age-Romane bei und verweist zugleich darauf, wie wenig viele europäische Kulturkreise mit historischen oder gegenwärtigen Nationalstaaten zur Deckung zu bringen sind.
