Seine auch in den biblischen Quellen recht deutlich dargestellte schwule Liebesbeziehung zu Jonathan wird nicht nur immer wieder als Beleg (geduldeter) Homosexualität in der jüdisch-christlichen Tradition angeführt. Sie ist vor allem als Motiv jugendlicher schwuler Liebe und ihres Verrats immer wieder aufgegriffen worden.
