Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten schwulen Autoren des ausgehenden 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhunderts, ein großer Teil seiner Romane ist autobiographisch geprägt und schildern seine Erfahrungen als offen schwul lebender Mann in den USA und Frankreich.
