Die ritualisierte Entfernung der Vorhaut war ein hochgradig symbolischer und von religiösen Vorstellungen beeinflusster Initiationsakt, der den Übergang des Jungen ins Mannesalter markiert. Auch wenn der religiöse Überbau der Beschneidung heute nicht mehr existiert, hat sich der Eingriff erhalten.
