Dieser Stoff hat das Gehalt um den Sockel der ältesten Autokratie der Welt zu erschüttern: Mord, Korruption und Vertuschung bis in die obersten Etagen des Vatikan – in der Nacht des 4. Mai 1998 werden die Leichen des Kommandanten der Schweizergarde, Alois Estermann, seiner Frau und des Gardisten Cédric Tournay in den Quartieren der päpstlichen Truppe aufgefunden. Angeblich hat der frustrierte Gardist Tournay die blutige Tat begangen. Innerhalb weniger Minuten schottet der Vatikan den Ort des Verbrechens ab und unterbindet jedwede Untersuchung italienischer Sicherheitsbehörden. Die vom Vatikan veranlassten eigenen Untersuchungen ergeben nach 9 Monaten nur eine Bestätigung der anfänglichen Mordtheorie. Tatsächlich zeigt jedoch die Autorin, dass die Schlüsse der päpstlichen Untersuchungskommission ein Witz sind – voller unhaltbarer Unterstellungen, unaufgelöster Widersprüche und unerklärlicher Auslassungen. Und so erhärtet sich der Verdacht, dass der Vatikan ein vitales Interesse daran gehabt zu haben scheint, die Wahrheit zu unterdrücken, die Behörden zu behindern und einen drohenden Skandal im Keim zu ersticken. Von besonderer Bedeutung in diesem Zusammenhang dürfte das Faktum sein, dass der junge Tournay und sein Kommandanten Estermann durch homosexuelle Aktivitäten verbunden waren – ein pikantes Detail, das im Vatikan angesichts der dort vorherrschenden homophoben Grundeinstellungen eine wahre Panik auszulösen imstande war.
