Jack Kerouac und Allen Ginsberg waren die beiden wohl herausragendsten Vertreter der Beat Generation. Aber die beiden waren auch durch eine enge Freundschaft miteinander verbunden. Beide Männer beeinflussten sich gegenseitig in ihrem Leben und auch in ihrem Schreiben. Kurz nachdem sich die beiden erstmals 1944 begegnet waren und sich angefreundet hatten, begannen die beiden auch ihre Brieffreundschaft, die thematisch und qualitativ stark streute. Die beiden hielten den brieflichen Kontakt - abgesehen von wenigen Unterbrechungen - bis 1969 aufrecht, als Kerouac starb.
