Trotz seines immensen und enorm einflussreichen Werkes ist über William Shakespeares Leben (v.a. über Person und Privatleben) nur sehr wenig überliefert. Diese Tatsache hat bislang jedoch nur wenige Biografen abgeschreckt, sich dem genialen Dramatiker zuzuwenden. Ackroyd zeigt einen Mann, dem die Freiheit und das Spiel mit Worten am Herzen lag, der gleichzeitig mit überschäumender Energie und einem brillanten Geist ausgestattet war. Ackroyd übersieht jedoch nicht die dunkleren Seiten des Stückeschreibers: eine gewisse Pedanterie und ein Hang zum Ehrgeiz. Überraschen dürfte übrigens Ackroyds Theorie, dass Shakespeare über seinen Vater katholisch geprägt worden sei und dass diese Prägung sich auf vielfältige, nicht eindimensionale Weise in seinem Werk niedergeschlagen habe.
