John Neumeier (Jahrgang 1942) nahm Ballettunterricht in seiner Heimatstadt Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in Kopenhagen und London. 1973 kam er als Chef ans Hamburg Ballett, das er vollständig umkrempelte - personell wie stilistisch (er feuerte die gesamte alte Truppe und brach radikal mit vorherrschenden choreografischen Balletttraditionen). Auch wenn es anfangs so aussah, als würde er sich dort nicht lange gegen diverse Widerstände halten können, gelang ihm das dank seiner sensationellen und teils legendären Inszenierungen bis heute. Als Zeichner gehörte Alfred Kubin zu den wichtigsten Künstlern seiner Zeit.
