This book explores the origins and history of the modern American movement of homosexual rights, which originated in Los Angeles in the late 1940s and continues today. Part ethnography and part social history, it is a detailed account of the history of the movement as manifested through the emergence of four related organizations: Mattachine, ONE Incorporated, the Homosexual Information Center (HIC), and the Institute for the Study of Human Resources (ISHR), which began doing business as ONE Incorporated when the two organizations merged in 1995. Relying on extended interviews with participants as well as a full review of the archives of the Homosexual Information Center the author unearths the institutional histories of the gay and lesbian rights movement and the myriad personalities involved.

Dieses Buch will verzaubern. Es bietet Einblicke in die 100jährige Geschichte der Berliner Lesben und Schwulen in den drei nordöstlichen Stadtteilen Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg und Weißensee. Der Bogen reicht von der Kaiserzeit über die goldenen Jahre der Weimarer Republik, die existenzbedrohende Situation der Nazizeit und die repressive DDR-Zeit bis zur Gegenwart. Auch wenn die Stasi versuchte, die homosexuelle Szene in Ostberlin mit Repressionsmaßnahmen unter der Oberfläche der Sichtbarkeit zu halten, ließen sich Schwule, Lesben, Bisexuelle und Transen nicht unterkriegen. Sie lebten ihr Leben und liebten sich. Dabei schufen sie Nischen für sich, setzten Marken in der Kunst, in der Literatur, im Theater. Sie kämpften für ihre Rechte als Menschen und DDR-Staatsbürger. Heute hat sich in Pankow ein weiteres Szenezentrum mit einer Mischung aus »altem Osten« und »neuem Westen« gebildet.

Die Kirche unter Papst Benedikt XVI. ist fest im Griff eines fundamentalistischen Revisionismus und der Reaktion. Da wird kompromisslos zum Angriff auf die Moderne geblasen: der Trennung von Kirche und Staat sowie die Werte der Aufklärung werden relativiert. Die Selbstbestimmung und Gleichberechtigung der Frau wird als falsch verworfen. Die Homosexuellen werden zu heilbaren Kranken abgestempelt, die von ihrem Lebensweg durch Beten erlöst werden könnten. Kondome werden als Teufelszeug gebrandmarkt. Der Holocaust wird relativiert, und der katholische Anteil an dieser Schuld bestritten. Mit dem Kreationismus startete die Kirche einen Rollback gegen die Wissenschaften. Viele der als Ausrutscher entschuldigten Exzesse des neuen Papstes waren wohlgeplant und enthüllen im Grunde eine expansionistische, fundamentalistische Strategie des Vatikans.
