Steven Angelides: A History of Bisexuality

Why is bisexuality the object of such scepticism? Why do sexologists steer clear of it in their research? Why has bisexuality, in stark contrast to homosexuality, only recently emerged as a nascent political and cultural identity? Bisexuality has been rendered as mostly irrelevant to the history, theory, and politics of sexuality. The author explores the reasons why, and invites us to rethink our preconceptions about sexual identity. Retracing the evolution of sexology, and revisiting modern epistemological categories of sexuality in psychoanalysis, gay liberation, social constructionism, queer theory, biology, and human genetics, the author argues that bisexuality has functioned historically as the structural other to sexual identity itself, undermining assumptions about heterosexuality and homosexuality.

Where are all the bisexuals? In a society dominated by an either/or mentality, bisexuality often defies explanation. Combining queer theory with cultural geography, autobiographical, archival, and media sources, the author insists on the importance of bisexuality in lesbian, transgendered, and queer spaces.

This historical sourcebook of gay and lesbian politics brings together the key primary sources relating to the politics of homosexuality. Presenting political, historical, legal, literary and psychological documents which trace the evolution of the gay and lesbian movement, this edited volume includes such diverse documents as organization pamphlets, essays, polemics, speeches, newspaper and journal articles, and academic papers – from the beginnings in the 19th century (Karl H. Ulrichs, Magnus Hirschfeld, and John A. Symonds) via legal and governmental studies concerning rights of gay and lesbian citizens or articles from the early U.S. liberation movement publications such as »Mattachine Review«, »The Ladder«, and »ONE« to documents of the AIDS epidemic, of current activism, of movements within »the movement« (bisexuals, S/M, conservatives), and finally a look at the future of gay and lesbian politics. Together the documents allow readers to examine the development of political movements based on homosexual identity, the history of government persecution of homosexuality, the impact of feminism on the modern lesbian and gay rights movement, and the emergence of queer theory.

Bisexuality was intrinsic to the cultures of the ancient world. In both Greece and Rome, same gender sexual relationships were acknowledged, and those between men were not only tolerated but widely celebrated in literature and art. Nor for Greeks and Romans was homosexuality an exclusive choice, but alternative to and sometimes concurrent with the love of the opposite sex. Whilst exploring aspects of the female condition in Classical antiquity, the author came to understand that the sheer ubiquity of male homosexuality had a fundamental impact on relationships between men and women. Drawing on the full range of surviving sources – legal texts, inscriptions, medical documents, poetry and philosophical literature – she explores the psychological, social and cultural mechanisms that determined sexual choice, considers the extent to which that choice was free, directed or coerced in each civilization and so reconstructs the homosexual cultures of Greece and Rome. In Greece the relationship between adults and young boys was deemed the noblest of associations, a means of education and spiritual exhaltation. The author reveals that such relationships, though highly regulated and never left to individual spontaneity, were more than pedagogic and platonic: they were fully carnal. In Imperial Rome, however, the sexual ethic mirrored the political, and males were cruelly domineering in love as in war. The critical sexual distinction was that between active and passive, the victims commonly being slaves or defeated enemies, rather than young Roman freemen.
