Das Semester geht zu Ende, aber Finn hat sich bisher noch nicht um einen Ferienjob gekümmert. Wenigstens weiß er, wo er in der Zeit unterkommen kann. Dennoch nimmt er das Angebot an - wohl wissend, dass er sich damit auf ein gefährliches Spiel einlässt. Und es dauert nicht lange, bis alles aus dem Ruder läuft. Finn konnte ja Arbeits- und Sexleben nie gut auseinander halten. Dass Marco seine Hände im Spiel hat, macht es nicht besser: und diesmal hat Marco - als sein Chef - auch noch die Hosen an.

Anfang der 80er Jahre: Madeleine Hanna liest begeistert Roland Barthes und arbeitet am College literaturwissenschaftlich über die Liebeshandlungen viktorianischer Romane. Während sie über uralte Beweggründe menschlicher Herzen brütet, bricht das wirkliche Leben in Form zweier junger Männer über sie herein. Zur selben Zeit lässt sich Madeleines alter Freund Mitchell Grammaticus wieder blicken und ist ganz besessen von dem Gedanken, dass sie für ihn bestimmt sei und umgekehrt. Und bald stellt sich die Frage, ob es heutzutage die großen Liebesgeschichten nicht mehr gibt - in Zeiten von sexueller Freiheit, Eheverträgen und Scheidungen.
