A cult classic, it has influenced generations of writers with its raw, sparse and unapologetic tone. In work and in life Burroughs expressed a lifelong subversion of the morality, politics and economics of modern America. To escape those conditions, and in particular his treatment as a homosexual and a drug-user, Burroughs left his homeland in 1950, and soon after began writing.

At the end of World War II, Captain Charles Ryder and his troops, looking for a billet, have just arrived at Brideshead, the now-dilapidated family castle belonging to Lord Marchmain, a place where Charles Ryder stayed for an extended period just after World War I, the home of his best friend from Oxford, the outrageous and obviously gay Lord Sebastian Flyte who, even in his university days, wouldn't abandon his teddy bear, Aloysius. Sebastian, an odd and decadent person, tries to escape his upbringing and religious obligations through alcohol. Much is made of the homoerotic subtext of the relationship between Sebastian and Charles. Charles feels responsible for Sebastian's welfare, and though there is no mention of any homosexual relationship, Charles does say that it is this friendship which first teaches him about the depths of love. Another central gay character is the stammering and blatant Anthony Blanche. This gay classic has now been reprint a film tie-in for the upcoming remake motion picture.

Five people's dreams, obsessions and failures interweave in this atmospheric novel of life in a peace-time army camp. In the US Deep South is a fort that contains a group of men and women trapped in a stifling and repetitive existence. At the center is secret aesthete, figurative eunuch, and kleptomaniac Captain Weldon Penderton, a repressed homosexual whose desires are so internalized that the only expression they can find is rage and despair. Routinely and masochistically he becomes enamored of his wife's lovers. Rounding out the cast is the introverted Private Williams, a somnambulistic young man and undetected murderer who awakens to a new level of consciousness and strange longing after coming into contact with Leonora, whose horse, Firebird, he stables. This novella was written in 1941 and its underlying sexual tones are well ahead of its time. From extra marital affairs to homosexuality with a little voyeurism mixed in, we get a very unique picture of a Southern army base in the 1940s.

Kann man überhaupt durch eine Überdosis Lachgas zu Tode kommen? Den Tatverdacht zieht zunehmend Altlanders deutlich jüngerer, bildhübscher Liebhaber Enzo auf sich. Niemand scheint Altlanders Tod zu betrauern. Auch Enzo nicht. Die italienische Mordkommission fordert Hilfe von den Münchner Kollegen an - nicht ganz uneigennützig, wie sich bald herausstellt. München schickt die Kommissarin Laura Gottberg in ihren vierten Fall - die Lage des Ermittlungsortes ist zwar herrlich, aber die näheren Umstände des Mordfalls sind es weniger.

Anlässlich der Verleihung des Georg Büchner-Preises 2008 werden die Bücher des Kärntner Autors Josef Winkler neu aufgelegt. Darunter auch sein fulminantes Frühwerk: die Trilogie »Das wilde Kärnten« - bestehend aus »Menschenkind«, »Der Ackermann aus Kärnten« und »Muttersprache«. Repression als eine der menschlichen Grunderfahrungen zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch Josef Winklers Werk. Es war auch seine persönliche Erfahrung: als Schwuler im provinziellen Kärnten unter dem Joch eines autoritären Vaters aufzuwachsen. Autobiografisches floss in diese Romantrilogie ein. Besonders bewegend die Szene, in der zwei ineinander verliebte, schwule Jungen keinen anderen Ausweg aus ihrer deprimierenden, dörflichen Situation sehen, als sich mit dem Strick in der Scheune das Leben zu nehmen. Ein schwuler Klassiker, wenn auch schwer verdaulich.
