Der schwule Poet Allen Ginsberg war neben William S. Burroughs und Jack Kerouac eine der drei zentralen Figuren der Beat-Generation. Wie kein Gedicht vorher oder nachher hat Allen Ginsbergs »Howl - Das Geheul« den Nerv einer ganzen Generation getroffen und dem Mainstream einen Schock versetzt. Das 1956 erschienene »Howl« steht für eine massive Aufbruchstimmung im Denken der US-Jugend am Ende der moralinsauren Eisenhowerjahre - weg von einer alles erdrückenden Zwangsjackenmoral hin zu mehr Freiheiten - künstlerisch wie sexuell. Der Film der Regisseure Epstein und Friedman zeigt, unter welchen Umständen das Gedicht entstand. James Franco in der Hauptrolle haucht dem dargestellten, frühen Ginsberg ein schauspielerisch bemerkenswertes Leben ein - mit vielen gelungenen biografischen und intimen Szenen. 1957 musste Ginsberg wegen »Howl« - Vorwurf der Obszönität - vor Gericht erscheinen. Auch das ist Teil des Films.

Nicht alles ist dort Lederhose (und selbst dann kommt auch eher darauf an, was man darunter trägt). Hier bekommt das Wort »Weißwurst« dann auch eine gänzlich neue Bedeutung - ein neues Gesicht im Kosmos der Phallussymbole. Auf alle Fälle kommt der Leser bei diesen homoerotischen Ergüssen auf seine Kosten - ein Beleg mehr dafür, dass München die heimliche Hauptstadt unseres großen Nachbarlandes ist.
