Tschaikowsky versuchte lange vergeblich, Anerkennung für seine eigenen Kompositionen zu erlangen. Zunächst schlug er sich als Klavierlehrer durch. Die Unterstützung der reichen Witwe von Meck eröffnet ihm zwar neue Möglichkeiten, doch um zu verschleiern, dass er schwul ist, heiratet Tschaikowsky die junge Nina. Diese freilich entpuppt sich als Nymphomanin, die schließlich im Irrenhaus landet. Tschaikowsky freilich findet Inspiration ausschließlich in seinen schwulen sexuellen Abenteuern. Kritiker warfen dem Filmklassiker mangelnde Faktentreue vor, »Tschaikowsky« mit dem damals noch nicht geouteten schwulen Hauptdarsteller Richard Chamberlain ist jedoch eine große Vision eines Künstlerlebens, romantisch und pathetisch inszeniert und effektvoll mit Musik Tschaikowskys unterlegt.

Ken Russell helms this graphic 1971 adaptation of a documented witchcraft case, which took place in France in 1634. Outspoken priest Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed) finds himself accused of seducing a group of hysterical nuns while in demon form by Mother Superior Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave), who is obsessed with Grandier and driven into a fit of envy when he marries another woman. With the involvement of charismatic exorcist Father Barre (Michael Gothard), the affair turns into a sordid mass exorcism of the tainted convent. With much controversy surrounding its subject matter of religion combined with violence and sex, many cuts were made to the film in order for it to attain certification.

Composer Peter Tchaikovsky (Richard Chamberlain) abandons his intimate friend, Count Chiluvsky, when Madame von Meck sponsors him after she hears him perform his First Piano Concerto. A tortured man, unhappy except in his music, Tchaikovsky marries Nina Milukova, a passionate, neurotic girl. When he is unable to fulfill the demands of matrimony, his tensions become so great that he attempts suicide and has a nervous breakdown. Nina's world also falls apart, and she deteriorates into madness and ends in an asylum. Tchaikovsky recuperates at a country estate of Madame von Meck. The two correspond, but never meet. At a great party, which she gives in his honor Count Chiluvsky tells Madame von Meck the truth about Tchaikovsky. She immediately severs all connections with the composer.
